Solution Type Problem Resolution Sure Solution 1006869.1 : Sun StorageTek[TM] 5210/5310/5320 NAS Appliance/Cluster/Gateway: Remains in Standard Time even after updating timezone database
PreviouslyPublishedAs 209534 Symptoms Customer followed the published list for updating the timezone database for the Sun StorageTek[TM] 5210/5310/5320 NAS Appliance/Cluster/Gateway found at http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hubs/dst/storage/update.jsp but even after the procedure was followed, the appliances remained in Standard Time when it should have been in Daylight Time. Resolution The listed procedures neglects to instruct the user to run one final command to update the binary timezone database. To finish the update procedure, the user must perform the following zic command: > zic dumpzones This command properly updates the binary database. See the following example: 5320 > zic /cvol/nf1/tz/northame 5320 > date 2007/03/30 07:42 PST 5320 > zic dumpzones 5320 > date 2007/03/30 08:42 PDT 5320 > date 2007/03/30 08:43 PDT Note that before the zic dumpzones command was performed, the Sun StorageTek 5320 NAS Appliance was in PST, after the dumpzones, the 5320 properly updated to PDT. Relief/Workaround Included here is the complete set of instructions for performing the timezone update for the SE5xx NAS including the zic dumpzones command: 1. Download the current timezone database files from ftp://elsie.nci.nih.gov/pub/. The desired file will have a name of the form tcdataYYYYn.tar.gz, for example; tzdata2007c.tar.gz 2. Use gunzip and tar to extract the database files. The extracted files reference various continents and regions as shown below. There are currently eleven regions. * africa * antarctica * asia * australasia * etcetera * europe * northamerica * pacificnew * solar87 * southamerica 3. Again, determine which boot directory is currently in use. telnet to the NAS head and when presented with the [menu] prompt enter admin <return>. Supply the admin password if required. When the admin prompt appears, enter the command: show bootdir This will return either bootdir=/cvol/nf1 or bootdir=/cvol/nf2 4. If a user wishes to update to the latest timezone rules, they will need to copy the desired group into the /cvol/nf1/tz or /cvol/nf2/tz directory depending on the value of the bootdir variable above. The recommended means to transfer the group file to the NAS is via an FTP. 5. Transfer group file to the NAS via FTP # ftp <ip_address or host_name of NAS> Log in as admin user providing password if necessary. Change directory to the desired location of the group file based on the value of the output from show bootdir above. cd /cvol/nf1/tz or cd /cvol/nf2/tz Set transfer mode to ascii ascii Transfer the file to the unix host put northamerica Terminate the ftp session bye The FTP transfer will truncate the filenames to 8 characters and the area names will appear as follows: africa, antarcti, asia, australa, etcetera, europe, northame, pacificn, solar87, southame 6. After the area, i.e. northame, has been transfered to the NAS and located in destination directory, the user must run the zic commands against the file loaded in the destination directory. Again, the destination directory is determined based on the value of the variable bootdir above. If the value of bootdir were bootdir=/cvol/nf1, we would have to update the timezone file in the nf1 directory. > zic /cvol/nf1/tz/northame (for North America) > zic dumpzones If the value of bootdir were bootdir=/cvol/nf2, we would have to update the timezone file in the nf2 directory > zic /cvol/nf2/tz/northame (for North America) > zic dumpzones Once the timezone file has been properly updated, the NAS should properly adjust itself to the PDT time.
