Symptoms
New Sun Fire[TM] V480 shipped from factory - the customer upgraded memory boards to two boards with 1200 MHz processors and the machine will not boot. Machine is experiencing "DCDS(Dual Cheetah Data Switches) error on Scan Ring not populated" errors.

Resolution
UltraSPARC(R) III & IV processors incorporated the MMU and temperature management apabilities into the on-board processor space functioning essentially like a series of gates.
These processors are referred to as DCDS or a Dual Cheetah Data Switches.

FIN # I0908-1 details a problem with the Sun Fire V880 and V480 systems with 900 MHz UltraSPARC III+ Mask 2.3 CPUs will be unable to boot unless firmware version 4.6.3 or later is installed. Older versions of firmware will not recognize the Mask 2.3 CPUs and POST will fail during the JTAG SCAN ID test.  A firmware upgrade is also necessary for the 1200 MHz processors.

This customer's problem was alleviated by upgrading the OBP firmware.
