Solution Type Problem Resolution Sure Solution 1002116.1 : Sun Fire[TM] V480/490 and V880/890 : Serial access from RSC lost after setting service-mode? to true
PreviouslyPublishedAs 203016 Symptoms Serial access from RSC is lost after setting service-mode? to true , or keyswitch placed in diag position and a reset is issued on Sun Fire[TM] V480,V880,V890 and V490 systems with 4.15 and higher firmware. This behavior began with firmware 4.15.1 on V480/490 and V880/890
For V480/490 that was with patch ID 113034-15 and continues thru the current OBP revs. Resolution If service-mode? = true, and is accidently done by the remote user, or accidently left by the local user (keyswitch put in diags and left accidently) it can be overridden by the RSC bootmode skip_diag command and invoke a power-cycle or reset from RSC. To recover the serial console: Respond with yes to the prompt: After the RSC Alert: Host System has Reset message appears When the ok prompt returns from the ok prompt enter setenv service-mode? false
from the ok prompt, issue a reset-all Additional Information This behavior is documented on table 2 of the Service Mode Overrides ( variables input-device and output-device set to Factory default) on page 7 of the OpenBoot PROM Enhancements for Diagnostic Operation Part Number 817-6957-10 The pdf document is included beginning in firmware patches beginning with 112186-17 and 113034-15. This behavior is also documented in the RSC 2.2.2 Release notes 816-3995-11 page 12.
