T5x20/T5x40 PATA DVD won't Boot or Mount (see details below).

Affected Parts:

501-7696-09 (or below)    DC Power Distribution Board
541-2073-08 (or below)    DC Power Distribution Board

Impact

In some cases the TUSB6250 controller may drop packets while booting from or reading the internal DVD device, resulting in the reads having to be reissued to be completed successfully.

The result of this issue can cause "read retry" messages reported to the end user over the system console.  In a worst case senario, the results could be numerous read retry messages reported to the user and a possible performance impact (slow response to reads) while accessing the internal DVD device.

Contributing Factors

Above listed Product/Platforms using PATA DVD drives with above listed Affected Parts running system firmware less than 7.1.8.a are suspectable to this issue.  SATA DVD drives are not impacted by this issue.

Symptoms

This issue can cause "read retry" message...

  wgsxx-xx incomplete read-retrying
  wgsxx-xx scsi: WARNING: /pci@0/pci@0/pci@1/pci@0/pci@1/pci@0/usb@0,2/storage@2/disk@0,0 sdxx

This read-retry issue can also manifest itself occasionally in system problems that will not allow booting via CDROM boot or mounting and utilizing CDROM/DVDs.

Root Cause

Root cause has been attributed to a reported hardware issue with the Texas Instruments TUSB6250 controller resident on both the 1U and 2U PDB boards.  The controllers exhibiting the problem are dropping packets because they are not properly seeing the EOP (End of Packet) pulse returned.

Several screens were implemented in the factories to remove failing devices from the supply population, and a component test screen was implemented at the supplier in June of 2009 that greatly reduces incidents of this problem in the field.  However, the possibilty of a system with a suspect device making it past the various screens has not been completely eliminated.

Corrective Action

Workaround:

No workaround available - see Resolution section below.

Resolution:

The complete solution for this issue requires the updating of not only Solaris and OBP USB drivers, but also TUSB firmware.  Currently, a supported mechanism to update TUSB firware in the field on one of these unreliable devices is not available.

Upon Failure follow the below procedure.

STEP #0: (before beginning)

Be certain that the DVD/USB Assy 541-2110 is at least -08.  Part numbers with lower dash numbers were found to cause issues similar to this.

The final solution contains three steps.

STEP #1:

The first part of the solution is to check to ensure the system PDB is at a dash level that will have TI v04.03.02.22.562AD423 firmware level or above.

In the 1U systems containing PDB (ASY,PDB,1U) part number 501-7696,  ensure it is -10 at a minimum.

In the 2U systems containing PDB (ASY,PDB,HORIZONTAL,2U) part number 541-2073, ensure it is -09 at a minimum.

STEP #2:

The second step is to update the system firmware to a minimum of either 7.1.8.a or 7.2.2.b.  Which you choose depends on whether you desire ILOM 2.0 or ILOM 3.0 functionality.

The PatchID to move to firmware revision 7.1.8.a for the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5120/T5220 is 136932-10, and for the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5140/T5240 is 136932-12.  PatchID 136932-01 was the latest T5120/T5220 ILOM 2.0 based firmware versions at the time of the release of this FAB.  Those versions of the patches contain the required fix.

The PatchID to move to firmware firmware 7.1.8.c for the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5140/T5240 is 136936-13, which was the latest ILOM 2.0 based firmware at the time of the release of this FAB. It is always recommended that the latest available firmware be installed. Therefore, for T5140/T5240 install a minimum of 136936-13.

For Sun SPARC Enterprise T5120/T5220 ILOM 3.0 firmware 7.2.2.b is PatchID 139439-03 and for Sun SPARC Enterprise T5140/T5240 ILOM firmware 7.2.2.b is 139444-02. Those versions of those patches contain the required fix.  However, for both Hardware Platforms 7.2.2.e is the latest ILOM 3.0 based firmware at the time of the release of this FAB.  It is always recommended that the latest available firmware be installed. Given that, you should install firmware 7.2.2.e at a minimum, which for T5120/T5220 is 139439-04 and for T5140/T5240 is 139444-03.

STEP #3:

The final step is to update the Solaris driver stack by applying the appropiate patches depending upon which Solaris release you are running.

The patches needed to update each version of Solaris are listed below with the final patch being patch ID # 139928-02. The patches are listed left to right in order of installation.

Solaris    Dependency Patches:

  S10u7    139928-02
  S10u6    139928-02
  S10u5    119254-58, 138866-01, 137137-09, 139928-02
  S10u4    125891-01, 127755-01, 127127-11, 119254-58, 138866-01, 137137-09, 139928-02

Comments

This issue was evaluated by Sun's Quality organization and found not to meet FCO criteria due to low impact and potential exposure to the issue.

This FAB supersedes FAB 234441 for the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5120/5220 and T5140/T5240 platforms, and that FAB has been updated to remove these products from the Affected Products section.

Solution  234441: Issues causing DVD Drive Excessive Read/Write errors and DVD Drive
  Not Accessible on T5120, T5220, T5140, T5240, X4150, X4450 and X4x40 Servers.

This FAB also supersedes FAB FAB 241966 for the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5120/5220 and T5140/T5240 platforms, and that FAB has also been updated to remove these products from the Affected Products section.

Solution  241966: DVD does not align during installation of the DVD and can cause
damage to the DVD and/or backplane.
