Solution Type FAB (standard) Sure Solution 1019938.1 : Booting from DVD fails or DVD drive not recognized on Netra T5220 and Netra T5440.
PreviouslyPublishedAs 249386 Bug Id <SUNBUG: 6774335>, <SUNBUG: 6766240>, <SUNBUG: 6804349> (was <SUNBUG: 6789861>) Date of Resolved Release 14-Jan-2009 Product Sun Netra T5220 Server Sun Netra T5440 Server Netra T5220/T5440 panics attempting to boot from TEAC DVD drive or fails to recognize DVD drive (see details below). Affected Parts: 540-7563-XX TEAC DV- DV-W28SLC-0Z3 DVD drive (390-0403) 371-2532-07 (or below) Netra T5220 Power Distribution Board 371-3648-06 (or below) Netra T5440 Power Distribution Board ImpactSun's supply partner shipped TEAC DVD drives and Power Distribution Board (PDB), Sun part number 371-2532-06 in late 2008 for the T5220. In most cases, usage of this vendor's drive with this version PDB revision -06 and system FW 7.1.7.c (or earlier) is associated with panics during DVD boot of Solaris 10 Update 5. Initially manufacturing removed the TEAC drive (Sun p/n 540-7563-xx) from production of the Netra T5220 as a workaround. The final fix for the panic issue was to upgrade the PDB to part number 371-2532-08, or upgrade PDB FW to TUSB -06 and to upgrade to system FW 7.1.7.h. This fix was delivered in early 2009 which also works for the TEAC drive. In some cases the Netra T5220 and Netra T5440 would not recognize the DVD after power on in the new FW configuration, and in some older ones. Contributing FactorsThese issues affect the Netra T5220 and Netra T5440 systems, with TEAC DVD drives (drive p/n 390-0403) and with Power Distribution Board (part numbers 371-2532-06 or 371-3648-05), or systems with Power Distribution Board (part numbers 371-2532-07 or 371-3648-06).SymptomsThe system panics during boot from DVD. The system could also fail to recognize the DVD, as follows (on Netra T5440): {0} ok cd /pci@400/pci@0/pci@1/pci@0/usb@0,2/hub@4/storage@4/disk@0:f Device not found Root CauseFirmware on Power Distribution Board part numbers 371-2532-07 (or below) and 371-3648-06 (or below), and Netra T5220 system FW 7.1.7.h (and earlier) and Netra T5440 system FW 7.1.7.e (and earlier) is the cause of these issues.Corrective ActionWorkaround:The system FW should be upgraded to 7.1.8.b for the Netra T5220 and 7.1.8.a for the Netra T5440. Please note that system FW 7.1.8.b is newer than 7.2.1, so care must be taken for higher releases. Also, the PDB FW should be upgraded remotely to usb6250-08 for the T5220 and the T5440 via the following process: 1. Request the firmware file "v04.02.12.22.562AD423.hex" (or higher) from Don Draygalski ([email protected]). Place it on any server that is reachable by the Turgo system which is getting programmed. 2. Make sure that an IP address is entered in the /etc/ethers of the tftp server (see doc 205300) where the Turgo system is with the ethernet address of the Turgo system entered with an IP address. 3. Power on the Netra system and get to the ok prompt. 4. From the ok prompt do the following three steps a. ok 4000 dload v04.02.12.22.562AD423.hex or "file-name with complete path" For example: {0} ok 4000 dload v04.02.12.22.562AD423.hex Boot device: /pci@0/pci@0/pci@1/pci@0/pci@2/network@0:,|v04.02.12.22.562AD423.hex File and args: 1000 Mbps full duplex Link up Requesting Internet Address for 0:14:4f:97:a7:d4 Requesting Internet Address for 0:14:4f:97:a7:d4 Requesting Internet Address for 0:14:4f:97:a7:d4 b.
