Impact

Having a different number of screws and screw holes in the Drive Cage Midplane and Chassis FRUs will lead to confusion in the field about the proper replacement procedures of the Drive Cage Midplane.

Contributing Factors

Due to a change in the above parts, it is possible for the field to have a mixture of old (-02) and new (-03) parts. In the case of the new Chassis and the old Drive Cage Midplane, there are 7 new screw holes in the Chassis for which there will be no matching screw holes in the Drive Cage. In the event of the old Chassis and the new Drive Cage Midplane, the 7 screw holes will be covered by sheet metal.

Symptoms

Due to the change in the number of screws and screw holes, it will appear that the parts cannot be used interchangeably.

Root Cause

A change in the mounting scheme added 3 additional screws to the top of the Drive Cage Midplane and Chassis and 4 additional screws to the bottom of the Drive Cage Midplane and Chassis.

The new (-03) version of these two parts was released via ECO# WO_34862 as of January 31, 2007. There was no purge of RSL inventories as both the -02 and -03 versions of these two parts are considered good/acceptable spares and are interchangeable.

Resolution

Any combination of old and new dash level parts are compatible as long as the 4 captive screws in front are used to secure the Drive Cage Midplane to the Chassis. Combinations of old dash level parts or old and new dash level parts will not be able to utilize the new screw locations on the top and bottom. Combinations with new (-03) only should utilize the new screw locations.

Identification of Affected Parts (how to):

Older part numbers 540-6545-02 (Drive Cage Midplane) and 540-6546-02 (CSM200 Chassis) have only 4 captive screws and screw holes located in the front of the tray to secure the Drive Cage. Newer part numbers 540-6545-03 and 540-6546-03 have 7 additional screws holes on the top (3 holes) and bottom (4 holes) used to secure the Drive Cage.
