PreviouslyPublishedAs 231542 Bug Id <SUNBUG: 6588111> Product Sun SPARC Enterprise M8000 Server Sun SPARC Enterprise M9000 Server Date of Resolved Release 12-Feb-2008 PSUBP connector shoulder screws should be inspected upon PSU failure (see details below).
ImpactSun SPARC Enterprise M8000 and M9000 platforms manufactured prior to week 33 of 2007 may have insufficiently threaded shoulder screws on the connector of the power supply backplane (PSUBP). This could result in the loss of a power supply.Contributing FactorsSun SPARC Enterprise M8000 and M9000 servers manufactured prior to week 33 of 2007 may be impacted by this issue.SymptomsThis issue may be observed as a PSU which suddenly fails during normal operation. The XSCF failure signature may appear similar to the example below:Jan 16 14:50:03 xscf0-0 Alarm: /PSU#45:SCF:Unit disappeared unexpectedly It may also be manifested through low voltages or other PSU faults logged via FMA or in the XSCF error log. Root CauseThe screw used to fasten the Power Supply Backplane (PSUBP) connector had larger thread relief than the sheet metal hole accommodated. For this reason the screws do not go all the way through which can lead to the PSU becoming electrically disconnected.Starting in week 33 of 2007 a screen was instituted at the supplier to correct this issue. Corrective ActionWorkaroundNo workaround is available.ResolutionNo field corrective action is available. Please open a TSC task if this issue is identified.Identification of Affected Parts (how to): Upon failure of a Power Supply (PSU) on one of the impacted platforms, use the attached document to inspect the Power Supply Backplane (PSUBP) connector shoulder screws. Normal screw threads extend 6mm or 8.5 threads.
