PreviouslyPublishedAs 201766 Product Sun Ultra 40 Workstation Bug Id <SUNBUG: 6471932> Part
Impact Some Sun Ultra 40 Workstations with AcBel power supplies may display an error message at boot up and the boot process will hang. Pressing the F1 key on the keyboard will allow booting to complete. Contributing Factors This could affect Sun Ultra 40 Workstations having an AcBel power supply unit. Not all AcBel units are impacted, but the affected date code range has not been determined yet. Systems with Delta power supplies are not affected. Sun Ultra 25 and Sun Ultra 45 systems use the same PSU but are not affected because they do not verify the PSU checksum during POST. Symptoms When this issue occurs the following message will display on the console. ERROR 0284:PS FRU checksum failed! ERROR 0285 FRU EEPROM access disabled The boot sequence will stop at this point. Root Cause AcBel power supplies were installed with incorrect CRC code. This causes the error message and hang during BIOS POST. Workaround If this error is encountered, the user should press the F1 key on the keyboard and booting will continue normally. Resolution The following link will get you to an .ISO image to create a bootable CD that can be used to upgrade the power supply FRU. This is only for use to update the power supply FRU until the official 1.5 tools and drivers is released and this image should not be used to update BIOS/drivers etc on a shipping platform; /net/ctforh.east/pub/testbios/sirius/psfru-1.4/ Once you have the cd image, insert the CD into the U40 drive. Make sure the BIOS has the CD-ROM listed as a bootable device. At the menu select number 4 ( Exit to Dos). Change directory to PSFRU. Read the README file for information. It is advisable to run the utility with the -p option first to verify the checksum value needs to be changed. Do not run psfru -f without verifying it is needed. How to run: There are 4 switches which are: -v Verbose Output (optional) -p Print output (nice to use - print all FRU fields) -f Recalculate and re-write the power supply FRU PROM checksum -h Help (display this info) Output on a bad power supply looks similar to this: C:\psfru -p PSFRU v1.0 SM Bus Base Address: 7040 Spec Part Number 885-0468-01 Sun Part Number 3001800 Time Stamp Tue Oct 11 14:34:56 2005 Serial Number 123456 Vendor ID 05ab (Acbel) Checksum32: 429662e5. Checksum from FRU PROM: 42969de5 **** PSFRU CHECKSUM ERROR. Use -f switch to re-write correct checksum After re-running the program with -f, good output looks like this: C:\psfru -p PSFRU v1.0 SM Bus Base Address: 7040 Spec Part Number 885-0468-01 Sun Part Number 3001800 Time Stamp Tue Oct 11 14:34:56 2005 Serial Number 123456 Vendor ID 05ab (Acbel) Checksum32: 429662e5. Checksum from FRU PROM: 429662e5 PSFRU CHECKSUM is Ok. Modification History Date: 11-OCT-2006
