Solution Type FAB (standard) Sure Solution 1001184.1 : Mirrored 40GB disk drives on Sun Fire V100 and Netra X1 systems may be exposed to a drive compatibility issue when a failed drive is replaced.

Impact Seagate 40.0GB disk drives and IBM 41.1GB disk drives, used on Sun Fire V100 and Netra X1 systems, are both identified with the same Sun part number (370-4419), but are not compatible. An issue can arise when the disk drives are used in a mirrored configuration and there is a replacement of an IBM 41.1GB drive with a Seagate 40.0GB drive. If a mirrored 41.1G IBM drive fails on one of these platforms, you must replace it with another 41.1G IBM drive (370-7631), or an 80GB (540-6215) if a 41.1GB IBM FRU is not available. Contributing Factors The type of disk can be identified physically from the label on top of the disk drive. The label identifies the manufacturer and the manufacturer's model number. IBM part # IC35L040AVER07 with Sun 370-4419 part number label or IBM part # IC35L040AVER07 with Sun 370-7631 part number Services stock was purged and the IBM drives were relabeled with the 370-7631 part number. However, IBM drives in customer systems may still carry the 370-4419 part number. Symptoms If a mirrored 41.1GB disk in a Sun Fire V100 or Netra X1 system is incorrectly replaced with a 40.0GB drive, a disk mirroring error occurs, and the mirror cannot be re-established because the replacement disk is smaller than the existing mirrored partner. Root Cause The root cause of this issue is that there are two drives with two similar, but different, capacities reporting to the same part number (370-4419). The failing condition exists when disk mirroring is used and the drive capacities are not similar. The technical fix was made available via ECO WO_30123 in October, 2004 releasing part number 370-7631-01, which is a 41.1GB (only) disk drive. Resolution For customers who experience a failure on a mirrored disk in a Sun Fire V100 or Netra X1 system, follow these guidelines.
In the event that the system has mirrored IBM 41.1GB drives and a replacement drive part number 370-7631 is not available, an alternate is to replace the faulty drive with an 80GB drive part number 540-6215. In this case the replacement drive should be formatted to match the IBM 41.1GB - each corresponding partition on the new 80GB drive should be equal to or greater than that of it's 41.1GB mirror partner.
