Date of Resolved Release
11-Jan-2008

Some or all Blades on a Constellation 10 shelf (Sun Blade 6000) may shut down spontaneously. (see below for details)

Part
  • Part No: 300-1802-07
  • Part Description: 300-1802-07 Power Supply (PSU)

Impact

Some or all Blades on a Constellation 10 shelf (Sun Blade 6000) may shut down spontaneously. The affected Power Supplies (PSUs) have been reported to cause component damage to the Electronic Circuit Breaker (ECB) circuit on some Wolf (X6250) Blades.

Wolf Blade (Sun Blade X6250), A93-AA, X4360A, X4361A, X4362A, X4363A, X4364A, X4365A may be damaged by affected PSUs.

Contributing Factors

Sun Blade 6000 servers with Power Supply (p/n 300-1802-07) having a date code of between 0723 and 0728 inclusive are impacted.

Symptoms

Some or all Blades on a Constellation 10 shelf (Sun Blade 6000) may shut down spontaneously.

Root Cause

The Model A206 PSU, Sun p/n 300-1802-07, was ECO released to incorporate rework of -06 PSUs beginning date code 0723. With the new layout on the -07 parts (which was to incorporate the rework into the fab), it was found that the PSU could now not deliver rated output current. This was root caused to a current spike blanking circuit.

With the blanking circuit installed in the current layout voltage spikes as high as 15V on the 12V output have been seen. Constellation Blades use electronic circuit breaker (ECB) components to protect the Blade from overvoltage. On most Blades, the ECB components are rated at 20V. The Wolf Blade ECB is only rated at 15V, so the ECB components on that card can actually be damaged by this design issue.

The responsible blanking circuit was removed as of date code 0729. Services Logistics inventory (RSLs) were never shipped any affected PSUs and are therefore not impacted.

Implementation Target Completion Dates:

AMER: January 11, 2009
APAC: January 11, 2009
EMEA: January 17, 2009

Replacement Time Estimate: 30 minutes

Resolution

Hot Swappable: Yes

Proactively replace 300-1802-07 (having date codes of 0723 - 0728) with 300-1802-07 (or later) with date code other than 0723 - 0728.

NOTE:  A variety of PSU revisions currently exist in the field / install base.  Mixing a -07 version PSU with either a -06 or -08 version may cause a false fault condition on some -07 PSUs.  (The DC_OK_L LED PSU underfault may turn OFF.)  It is recommended to NOT mix -07 PSUs with other versions.  Replace both PSUs if necessary to avoid this potential false fault condition.  It is NOT mandatory, however, to
update PSUs to the latest revision if a compatible mix can be achieved.  PSU configuration examples:

 - All -06:  functions properly

 - All -07:  functions properly

 - All -08:  functions properly

 - Mix -06 with -08:  functions properly

 - Mix -07 with -06:  A false fault condition may occur. Avoid this configuration.

 - Mix -07 with -08:  A false fault condition may occur. Avoid this configuration.

Customers with Wolf Blades (Sun Fire X6250) should be contacted first.

Identification of Affected Parts (how to):

Visually inspect A206 PSU (p/n 300-1802-07) for date code of between 0723 and 0728 inclusive. This can be done by looking at the PSU Serial Number.

Example: If Serial Number = "1841DET-0726A42172" then "0726" is the date code.

Internal Comments (see below for details).

For US/Canada, parts are VERY limited until January 31, 2008.  ONLY SB6000s sold with Wolf Blades (X6250s) should be remediated between January 11 and January 31, 2008.  See SunFIT for affected serial numbers and note that all SB6000s sold with Wolf Blades will have w/X6250 in their S/N.

Example: 0744BD0695
               w/X6250

All other affected SB6000s should begin parts replacements after January 31, 2008.
