Impact

After a successful VMotion guest migration, "Guest" either reports bad DLL or BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) caused by bad DLL. Sometimes these are permanently bad DLL's and require reinstalling the application. This is data corruption and it was detected in lab testing. A similar event (Bad DLL requiring customer lab to restore DLL) occurred in customer's lab. To fix this issue, VMware has generated a patch described below.

Resolution

This is a third party VMware issue but affects Sun's StorEdge 99xx product line. Therefore, there is no SE99xx microcode fix required for this issue, only the VMware patch mentioned below needs to be installed when running VMotion. VMware has implemented the change into VMware GA production version ESX 2.5.3 patch 2. Hitachi Data Systems has successfully tested the ESX 2.5.3 patch 2 on all of SE99XX storage subsystems that support VMware.
