Part Description: C4 Hand Umbilical Cable

Impact

If the C4 Hand Umbilical Cable is removed from the hand before releasing the ZIF (zero insertion force) locking mechanism, intermittent opens may occur as a result of damage to the cable.

The umbilical cable is now a FRU and can be ordered through the spares process. Replacement of the chassis is no longer necessary for this issue. The Sun part number of the umbilical cable is 380-1558-01. The procedure for replacing the cable is in Chapter 5 of the C4 Field Service Manual.

Contributing Factors

Mishandling of the ZIF locking mechanism on the following Sun StorageTek C4 Libraries:

SG-XLIBLTOS-C4-Z   C4 library base-LTO SCSI, 38 cart slots, RoHS -5 compliant
SG-XLIBSDLTS-C4-Z  C4 library base-SDLT SCSI, 32 cart slots, RoHS -5 compliant
SG-XLIBLTOFC-C4    C4 library base-LTO FC, 38 cart slots, RoHS -5 compliant
SG-XLIBSDLTFC-C4   C4 library base-SDLT FC, 32 cart slots, RoHS -5 compliant

Symptoms

Intermittent opens at this connector would be limited to intermittent robotic move errors and/or vision errors. Depending on the degree of damage, the library may recover with a retry but eventually will hard fail and require a service call. Replacement time for this cable will be about 1 hour.

Root Cause

Failure to unlock the ZIF connector locking tabs before removal of the umbilical cable can cause intermittent opens at the cable connection due to damage induced by the locking mechanism.

Resolution

Service personnel should ensure adherence to procedures for servicing this library as described in the C4 Field Service Manual and in the below one-pager to avoid damaging the ZIF cable.
