Impact

A bug identified in the management method for modifying device files in HDvM releases below 4.2.0 may result in an error condition when Host data is updated (for example, by a refresh, HiScan operation, or machine reboot) while the Delete Device File dialog box is still open, and then a deletion operation is executed. Under these conditions the following error may occur:

The name of a device file can be incorrectly changed with an incorrect device file name.
The device file with the selected device file name is lost.

The disk number and the device file name, which identifies the disk on the host server machine, might be changed by a configuration change or the machine reboot.

Affected levels : HPvM and HDvM less than 4.2.0

Workaround

Workaround

To safely delete a device file using the affected HDvM versions , perform the following procedure:

1) If the Delete Device File dialog box from a previous deletion execution is displayed, close it.

2) Use the HPvM refresh function to update the information for the host where the deletion is to take place. After data update is completed, record the "Last Updated:" time as displayed in the Host properties window.

3) To delete the device file, display the Delete Device File dialog box.

4) Before clicking the OK button in the Delete Device File dialog box (to execute deletion), ensure the "Last Updated:" time displayed in the Host properties window is the same as the following :

If these times are different, repeat the procedure from step 1 again.

a) For HPvM 3.5.0-00: The time recorded in step-2.

b) For HPvM 4.0.0-00 or later: The time shown in the "KARF40822-W" message displayed in the Delete Device File dialog box.

The issue is fixed in HDvM Server in the following releases :

For HDvM 4.2 releases : HDvM 4.2.0-00 and above

For HDvM 4.0 releases : HDvM 4.0.0-06 and above
