Part
  • Part No: 540-5906-05
  • Part Description: Sun StorEdge 6920 Management Interface Card (MIC)

Impact

The Sun StorEdge 6920 Management Interface Card (MIC) might fail to boot if it has a ROM revision prior to system version 3.0 (Unity 3.0), and is trying to read from a newer flash card with revision SLATAFL128J/SLATAFL128JU.

Here are the possible scenarios:

  • The flash card fails in a MIC with a ROM revision prior to system version 3.0 (Unity 3.0). If the customer receives a replacement flash card (revision SLATAFL128J or SLATAFL128JU), the MIC will be unable to recognize the new card and therefor will not boot correctly.
  • A MIC fails that currently has a flash card revision SLATAFL128J or SLATAFL128JU. If the customer receives a replacement MIC with a ROM revision prior to system version 3.0 (Unity 3.0), when they plug in their existing flash card the MIC will fail to boot.

Note 1: Only MIC revisions prior to 540-5906-05 ever had the affected ROM.

Note 2: Flash card version SLATAFL128H will work with any MIC.

Note 3: The flash card version number is printed on the front of the PC card.

Symptoms

If one of these scenarios does take place, the console output from the MIC may look similar to the following:

Root Cause

Flash card versions SLATAFL128J and SLATAFL128JU use a different controller chip internal to the PCMCIA card. Support for these new flash card versions was added in the Nov/30/2004 MIC ROM. This ROM version was shipped with system version 3.0 (Unity 3.0).

Workaround

If a new SLATAFL128J/SLATAFL128JU flash card is required, the MIC ROM must be upgraded to version 11/30/04 (Unity 3.0) or later.

If a stock MIC is being installed into a newer system with existing SLATAFL128J/SLATAFL128JU flash cards, the MIC ROM must first be upgraded to version 11/30/04 (Unity 3.0) or later.

Note: For assistance in upgrading the MIC ROM, please contact PTS for support.
