Sun System Handbook - ISO 3.4 June 2011 Internal/Partner Edition | |||
|
Sun is currently working to re-engineer our electronic and electrical equipment products to comply with the European Union (EU) 'Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment' Directive, usually referred to as the RoHS Directive. Read more here/FAQs. Field Action Bulletin (FAB) 1000169.1 and this addendum were recently released to describe the recommended approach to servicing such products most effectively through this transition period. As noted in the FIN, reference to the Sun System Handbook (SSH) to help diagnose and service systems which are non-compliant with the RoHS Directive and which have been put on the EU market before July 1, 2006, will be essential. This document helps provide instructions on how to use the SSH during this transition in such a manner to enable you have as much complete and accurate information to service Sun's systems, new and old, as effectively as possible. During the period of transition, a large number of products, parts and components will be changing to meet the RoHS Directive substance requirements. In turn, our product teams will be making a large number of changes to the information retained within Sun's systems which. Sun Services relies on the information in these systems to create the SSH. Until these Sun's systems contain the updated RoHS compliance information for all relevant products, parts and components, complete information my be unavailable to the SSH authors in order to complete an entry in the SSH for a product or a spare part. During this transition while the product teams are providing information about part numbers and their description, the necessary information regarding RoHS compliance may not be contained within the SSH. Our policy, developed and agreed by Services management, is that we will publish all available part number and description information that is available. In cases where RoHS information is deemed to be unavailable for whatever reason for a given part, we will publish information about that part in the SSH, but will not list RoHS information until the part's compliance can be fully confirmed. The SSH will be regularly updated as additional information becomes available. How do I use the SSH during this transition period? During this time, any part that is marked 'RoHS:Y' or 'RoHS:YL' at the end of the description is a RoHS-compliant part (see below for definitions of these terms) If a part description contained in a parts list does not contain "RoHS:Y" or "RoHS:YL" in its description, this indicates that the part is not RoHS compliant or the information necessary to confirm its compliance has yet to be provided by the responsible product team. The guidance from Services Management for determining appropriate action in the absence of the RoHS designators described above, is as follows. If the part appears in the list of components for a new RoHS compliant system within the SSH, then you should consider that part as an appropriate replacement part for that system. When servicing non-RoHS compliant equipment, if there appears to be a choice of RoHS compliant and non-RoHS compliant replacement parts, choose the non-compliant alternatives. What does the 'Y' and 'YL' mean?Y and YL are two of the possible Hazard Class Codes that Sun is using to help manage our parts and systems. You may also see N, Z and 'blank' being used. Y - Based on present information and belief, this equipment/part number complies with the European Union RoHS Directive, 2002/95/EC, and amending and guidance documents, and does not contain any restricted substances above the homogeneous materials' maximum concentration values, except for selected exemptions allowed by law (EXCLUDING the exemption for lead in solders for servers, storage and storage array systems, network infrastructure equipment for switching, signaling, transmission as well as network management for telecommunications). YL - Based on present information and belief, this equipment/part number complies with the European Union RoHS Directive, 2002/95/EC, and amending and guidance documents, and does not contain any restricted substances above the homogeneous materials' maximum concentration values, except for selected exemptions allowed by law (INCLUDING the exemption for lead in solders for servers, storage and storage array systems, network infrastructure equipment for switching, signaling, transmission as well as network management for telecommunications). N - Based on present information and belief, this equipment/part number does not comply with the European Union RoHS Directive, 2002/95/EC, and may contain restricted substances above the homogeneous materials' maximum concentration values. Z - Based on present information and belief, the European Union RoHS Directive, 2002/95/EC, does not apply to this equipment/part number. blank - The applicability of the European Union RoHS Directive, 2002/95/EC, to this equipment is presently unknown; this equipment/part number may contain restricted substances above the homogeneous materials' maximum concentration values.
