Volume I: CPUNVRAM and EEPROMThe IDPROM on Sun-3 and Sun-4 CPU boards contains the machine-type code, serial number, and ethernet address. The machine-type code and serial number are combined to create the hostid. Some companies use the hostid to license software to a specific machine. The hostid command displays the serial number in hexadecimal. The label on the IDPROM is decimal. The label on the NVRAM is alpha-numeric. The serial number displayed by the Power-On Self Test (POST) is decimal. Follow the steps in the example below to verify an IDPROM.
The serial number displayed by the POST is #1774. HOSTID ------ 1100xxxx |||||||| //\\\\\\ // \\\\\\ Machine-type Hex Serial # (1 byte) (3 bytes) ------------------------------------------------------------- | ||||||||||||
