		      APPLICATION NOTE

Using SSI graphic packages	with Sun's OpenWindows

Systems Science's graphics packages, Magellan, SimWave,
Tsunami, and XPlus, can operate on any system with X-
Windows, including systems running Sun's OpenWindows
software. However, OpenWindows has a problem which can seri-
ously disrupt their operation.	The following describes the
problem	and the	recommended work around.

The OPEN LOOK Window Manager,	"olwm", sets the keyboard
focus in one	of two manners: "click select" or "move
pointer". The "click select" mode has	a serious problem.
Using the SSI graphics packages	with the "click	select"	mode
can cause the OpenWindows environment to freeze. The
OpenWindows environment can only be unfrozen by killing the
"olwm" process. Therefore, we recommend running OpenWindows
with "move pointer" rather than	"click select".

The following describes	how to run OpenWindows with "move
pointer" mode:

1.) Popup the	OpenWindows' root menu by moving the mouse
to a portion of the screen not covered by	a window and
     pressing the right	mouse button.

2.) Select the Properties item from the OpenWindows	root
     menu.

3.) Select the Miscellaneous category in the Properties
     editor.

4.) Change the "Set Input Area" field	to "Move Pointer".

5.) Hit the "Apply" button to	save the changes.

Note, SimWave (2.3B and	earlier) and XPlus (4.5	and earlier)
were affected	by an	OpenWindows problem which prevented
users from typing into SimWave	and XPlus pop-up windows.
SSI has worked around this	problem. Newer versions of
SimWave	and XPlus allow	users to type directly	into pop-up
windows.

Note, SimWave (2.3G and	earlier), XPlus	(5.0a and earlier),
and Magellan (1.0A) required users to run the "xhost +"	com-
mand even when displaying graphics locally. This has	been
fixed.

Note, SimWave (2.3G and	earlier), XPlus	(5.0a and earlier),
and Magellan (1.0B and	earlier) would continue	to run after
the "quit" item	had been selected from the frame menu	pro-
vided by the OPEN LOOK Window Manager. After the "quit"	item
had been selected, the window would be	destroyed, but the
associated process continued	to run and consume system
resources. This has been fixed.
