Chapter 12
Undo & Redo
Visual Thought provides 100 levels of multiple undo and redo. Any action that affects the state of a drawing is undoable, whether it is creating or resizing an object, changing the graphical attributes of an object, or attaching or recording a sound.
View changes, such as panning and zooming, do not change document state, and are therefore specifically not undoable.
Multiple undo and redo free you by allowing you to make mistakes, since any mistake is undoable. Multiple undo and redo also allow you to be more creative, since you can quickly experiment with your drawing, and easily return to a "safe" state.
Using Undo and Redo Effectively
If you haven't used multiple undo and redo before, you may find it takes some time to learn how to use them most effectively. When you do, you'll find that this feature saves you a great deal of time. For example, if you accidentally move an object, rather than trying to move it back, just undo the move.
Multiple undo and redo allow you to play "what if" games with your drawings. For example, you might experiment with changing colors, line widths, and sizes of all the objects in your diagram. If you find you don't like the results, simply invoke undo multiple times until you are back to your original state.

Dirty Documents
Actions that change document state make the document dirty. Dirty documents, denoted by three asterisks by their names in the title bar, need to be saved to avoid losing work when you quit Visual Thought. Visual Thought will, of course, ask you for confirmation if you attempt to close a dirty document or quit without having saved first.

Undo and Redo Concepts
Relevant facts about the Undo and Redo commands include:
- Visual Thought allows up to 100 levels of undo.
- The Undo command can be accessed from the Edit menu, from the Ctrl-Z key accelerator, the Undo hot button, or from the Undo key on the left side of your keyboard.
- The Redo command can be accessed from the Edit menu, from the Ctrl-Shift-Z key accelerator, the Redo hot button, or from the Again key on the left side of your keyboard.
- The Undo (and Redo) apply only to actions within the View window; that is, only to actions that change document state, not to actions that change how the document is viewed. This is an important concept to understand.
You can undo the creation and organizing of a group of objects, for example, or a long sequence of formatting steps.
You cannot undo the saving of a document, for example, or the closing of a window.
