Installing Visual Thought (Windows 95 & NT only)

To install Visual Thought 1.4 on your Windows NT/95 system:

1.Run VT14.EXE. This will create a temporary directory named vt-14 that is only used
during installation and can be placed anywhere. It also runs setup.exe in the vt-14
     directory to perform the installation.

2.Read the various text files in the vt-14 directory, especially release.txt, which
tells you how to license Visual Thought.

   3.Delete the vt-14 directory.

You will need 25MB free temporarily on your hard disk to install Visual Thought, but after
removing temporary files, the Visual Thought installation will only require 12MB of permanent
 disk space.

Uninstalling Visual Thought (Windows 95 & NT only)

On Windows NT 3.5, double-click on the Uninstall icon in the Visual Thought 1.4 program
 group created during installation.

On Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0, double-click on the Add/Remove Programs applet in the
Control Panel folder. Select the Install/Uninstall folder, click on the Visual Thought entry to be
removed, and click on the Remove button.

 Installing Visual Thought (UNIX only)

Before you begin the installation, you should have the gunzip binary and these archive files:

    confluent-1.*-common.tar.gz
    confluent-1.*-hpux-9.tar.gz
    confluent-1.*-solaris-2.tar.gz
    confluent-1.*-sunos-4.1.tar.gz

You must have common.tar, but only what you need of the others.

1.In a terminal window (such as cmdtool or shelltool), become superuser with:

           % su root

and type your root password. (You don't actually need the root password to install Visual
Thought in a personal directory, but installation as root is recommended to allow access
     by other people.)

2.Choose a temporary directory in which to extract the distribution from the archive files.
This directory must have at least 34 megabytes of free disk space available if the entire
distribution is extracted. The remainder of this section uses ~/work as the temporary
directory, but you may want to replace this with another directory of your choosing.

   3.Create the temporary directory with:

           # mkdir ~/work

4.Copy the archive files to the temporary directory and extract the distribution from the
     archives with:

           # cp confluent-1.*.tar.gz ~/work
           # cd ~/work
           # umask 022 <--- to ensure that others can read the installation
           # gunzip -c confluent-1.*-common.tar.gz | tar xof -
           # gunzip -c confluent-1.*-hpux-9.tar.gz | tar xof -
           # gunzip -c confluent-1.*-solaris-2.tar.gz | tar xof -
           # gunzip -c confluent-1.*-sunos-4.1.tar.gz | tar xof -

5.Change to the top-level distribution directory and run the install script with:

           # cd confluent-1.*
           # ./install

The install script will guide you through the installation process.

6.Remove the distribution from the temporary directory with:

           # cd ..
           # rm -rf confluent-1.*

 Uninstalling Visual Thought (UNIX only)

You can uninstall an installation at any time. To do so, make sure you are superuser (or you have
appropriate permissions), then follow these steps:

1.Change to the top-level Confluent directory (assumed here to be /usr/local/confluent)
     with:

           # cd /usr/local/confluent

   2.Type:

           # admin/uninstall
