If you have a SPARCstation 10/SX or 20/SX model and if your system is properly configured, Adobe Photoshop 2.5.2 will automatically install the SXCharged plug-in, which takes full advantage of the SX co-processor. Most of Photoshop basic imaging operations are accelerated substantially by SXCharged. If you have a multiple-processor SPARCstation (and the SXCharged plug-in is not active), the Adobe Photoshop 2.5.2 will automatically install the MPCharged plug-in, which splits most of Photoshop's computational intensive tasks across all available CPUs, resulting in a near-linear speed-up per additional processor for these operations. (Note: unfortunately, on a system with both an SX chip and multiple processors, you have to choose which acceleration you prefer. You can't have both at the same time.) General performance tuning in Adobe Photoshop 2.5.2 has made a variety of operations faster, even on single processor systems without an SX chip. For example, resampling operations such as image rotation, resizing, skewing and distortion will run faster than with previous versions of Photoshop on the same computer. Adobe Photoshop 2.5.2 also takes advantage of a new multi-threaded architecture which provides maximum CPU utilization and efficiency by overlapping I/O requests with computational tasks. This results in better performance throughout the application. In addition to the performance improvements, Adobe Photoshop 2.5.2 includes enhanced support for Macintosh to UNIX third party file transfer. By using various third party transfer products, including NFS Share from Intercon, Partner from IPT,Inc., EtherShare from Helios, and K-A Share from XINET, you can now configure Photoshop to save documents in these formats to preserve the resource fork information for transparent use in Macintosh environments. Additionally, Adobe Photoshop 2.5.2 works with Wacom tablets. For more information on these new features, refer to the Adobe Photoshop Getting Started Guide Version 2.5.2. INSTALLING THE 2.5.2 UPDATE ---------------------------- Instructions are provided in the Getting Started guide for Easy Installation and Custom Installation of the version 2.5.2 update. It is not necessary to delete the older version of the application to install the newer one. However, when using the easyinst.pho script during an Easy Installation or the photoshop.makelinks script after a Custom Installation, you will be prompted to replace the launch script link to /usr/bin with a link to the newer version 2.5.2 launch script. When you launch version 2.5.2, your AdobePhotoshop working directory will be updated. RECOMMENDED SOLARIS 2.3 PATCHES INCLUDED ---------------------------------------- Adobe Systems has included two sets of patches to Solaris 2.3 that are highly recommended for installation on all SPARCstations using Photoshop. These patches fix serious problems in Solaris 2.3 that can result in hanging/crashing or display problems in Photoshop. Please refer to the readme.patches file for instructions for installing the patches. LAUNCHING ADOBE PHOTOSHOP ------------------------- The following is a quick summary on how to launch Adobe Photoshop. Before you launch Adobe Photoshop you should have obtained a valid license (to enable full functionality) and have optimized your environment (for best performance) . For more complete information or if you encounter errors, consult your Getting Started guide. To start Adobe Photoshop from the Open Windows desktop, double-click on the Photoshop Program Icon (photoshop) located in the /Photoshop_2.5.2/Photoshop.MacFiles/bin directory ( is /usr/adobe by default). If the Photoshop launch script has been linked to /usr/bin/photoshop, you can also launch Photoshop by typing into a UNIX shell window: % photoshop IMPORTANT: If you launch Photoshop from a UNIX shell, make sure you are not logged in as root (# prompt)! When you launch Adobe Photoshop the first time, it creates a working directory (AdobePhotoshop) in your home directory that contains the standard Adobe Photoshop files. Many of the files in this location are actually links to the Photoshop installation area. TWO VERSIONS INSTALLED ----------------------- In order to provide the best performance, the Photoshop distribution for the Sun platform actually contains two complete compiled versions of Photoshop: one version for Sparc chips with the version 8 (v8) instruction set and another for earlier versions of the chip (labeled v7, but actually supports all earlier versions of the Sparc chip). The install script copies both versions (V7 & V8) on to the directory (30000k). When launched, Photoshop automatically determines which type of Sparc chip you have, starts up the correct version of the program, and loads in the appropriate version of the standard Adobe plug-ins. WINDOW MANAGERS TESTED ---------------------- Adobe Photoshop for SUN has only been tested with the Open Look and Motif window managers. If you are using a different window manager (like twm or olvwm), Photoshop is not guaranteed to work completely or correctly. SOFTWARE DEVELOPER KIT IS INCLUDED ---------------------------------- The Plug-in Software Developer's Kit (SDK) for Adobe Photoshop - UNIX is distributed on the Adobe Photoshop 2.5.2 CD-ROM disks. If you are not a software developer, you can ignore these items. They will not be installed with the Photoshop distribution. The SDK consists of a UNIX specific addendum to the Macintosh version of the SDK as well as utilities, sample source and header files necessary for UNIX version plug-in development. The Macintosh Version SDK documentation (but not sample code) is also included in this distribution. You can also obtain the complete Macintosh SDK through a number of on-line services or through Adobe Developer Support. To access the SDK files, copy them from the /cdrom/adobe/photoshp/SDK directory to a local disk and follow the instructions in the PI_SDK_UNIX.ps file. ============= ADDITIONAL PROGRAM ERRORS ================= SAVE YOUR DOCS AND RESTART AFTER A PROGRAM ERROR ------------------------------------------------ Error: Could not complete your request because of a program error. If you receive a program error while running Adobe Photoshop, it is recommended that you immediately save all your documents and exit the application. Continuing to work with the program while your environment is in this state may cause unpredictable results. ERROR IF NOT ENOUGH SWAP SPACE ------------------------------ Error: Could not complete operation - not enough swap. There is a danger of X server instability if swap space gets too low. Since the X server does not gracefully handle memory allocation failure (caused by being out of swap space), it may not indicate that the swap is getting low. As a precaution, Photoshop checks how much swap space is free whenever an operation is performed that would cause X server memory to be allocated. This includes opening windows and zooming. If less than 10MB is available, Photoshop prevents the operation from continuing and brings up the warning dialog. Solution: If you receive this error, you should add additional swap space before continuing (see the Getting Started guide). If you cannot add additional swap space, it is highly recommended that you save your open documents and quit the application. If the environment variable PHOTOSHOP_MEMORY was explicitly set and you cannot add additional swap space, it should be set again to a smaller value before restarting Photoshop. NOTE: If warning is ignored Photoshop may enter loop state where message is generated immediately after dismissal, making save impossible. It is therefore recommended that user immediately save changes and remedy the situation. In extreme circumstances Photoshop as a consequence of no available swap will crash in which case either a console or system message will report the event. ERROR IF SCRATCH DISK VOLUME IS UNMOUNTED ----------------------------------------- Error: Could not complete your request because of a disk error The volume where the primary scratch disk is located has been unmounted. Re-mount the volume that has the primary scratch disk. ERROR IF SCRATCH DISK IS SET TO AN UNWRITABLE VOLUME ---------------------------------------------------- Error: Could not initialize Photoshop because you do not have the necessary access privileges. The primary scratch disk has been set to a volume to which you do not have write permissions. To re-enable Photoshop, delete the Photoshop preferences from the ~/AdobePhotoshop/Photoshop.MacFiles/System/Preferences directory and restart Photoshop. This will delete the reference to the unwritable scratch disk but will also revert all your preferences to their defaults. ERROR WHEN REINSTALLING ICONS ----------------------------- If you are running Open Windows and re-install Photoshop you may see messages similar to the following during the installation: add_name_space: new namespace Types add_avlist(NS_MANAGER, string, <$CEPATH/tns_mgr.so>) set_new_entry(is_ns 1) add_avlist(TYPE_NAME, type-id, ) add_avlist(TYPE_OPEN, call, ) ... These messages are the result of the icons having already been installed in Open Windows desktop and usually can be ignored. However, if the Photoshop icons did not install properly on your desktop, you may have to use the "binder" program (available from the default Open Windows root menu) to remove the previously installed Photoshop icons. If you encountered the above messages when performing an easy installation as root or by running deskinstall as root, then you will need to run binder as root and edit the "system" icons; if you encountered the above messages when running deskinstall as yourself, then you will need to run binder from your own login and edit "user" icons. After removing the old icons, then you can run the deskinstall program again. The error messages should not appear and Photoshop icons should be installed properly. See the Getting Started guide for more information on the deskinstall script. ======================= KNOWN PROBLEMS ========================= MULTIPLE USERS RUNNING PHOTOSHOP SIMULTANEOUSLY ----------------------------------------------- The default value for PHOTOSHOP_MEMORY generally works well when a single user is running Photoshop on a given machine. However, if multiple users are running Photoshop on the same machine, subsequent users may find that Photoshop does not launch or dies during start-up. The problem is mostly due to running out of swap space. Refer to the section PHOTOSHOP_MEMORY SETTING FOR MULTI-USER AND MULTI-PROCESSOR MACHINES below for workarounds. PHOTOSHOP CAN FREEZE EXCEPT FOR MAIN MENU ----------------------------------------- It is possible to freeze Photoshop except for the main menu. If you select a menu title so that it shows all of its items (for example, click once on the File menu), and you click on the menu bar in the area between titles (for example, between File and Edit), you will not be able to use your current tool or select a new tool from the Toolbox or option from a palette. Selecting any menu item under any menu title (for example, Edit-Undo) will re-activate Photoshop. MOUNTED VOLUMES OF THE SAME NAME NOT SHOWING -------------------------------------------- When two mounted volumes have the same name, only one will show up when you traverse to the desktop in Open File dialog. Use the Go To... option menu to locate the other volume. NO TABBING AFTER INVALID VALUES ENTERED --------------------------------------- If you enter invalid values in Photoshop dialog boxes, you may not be able to use the tab key to de-activate the field. Instead select the field and enter a valid value. FONT ISSUES ------------- A font titled "System Font" will be listed in the Type Tool Font Option menu. The system uses this font for some of its menus. The System Font will be the default font (most likely Helvetica Bold). You may experience some difficulties when many fonts (over 220) are installed. Depending on how much swap space has been allocated, you may experience a crash or hang when using large font sizes. If you experience this problem it is recommended that you increase your swap allocation. FUNCTION KEY ISSUES -------------------- Function keys F13, F14 and F15 will not work with standard keyboards since the keyboards only offer 12 function keys. If you want to assign mode conversions (Grayscale, RGB Color, CYMK Color, or Lab Color) to a function key, it is recommended that you specify it as "Mode:Grayscale", etc. It is best to actually choose the command from the menu bar to enter it into the Function Key preference dialog instead of typing it in. The F10 key is generally reserved for Sun OS functions and may exhibit some strange behavior (or hang the application) if assigned to the "New Window" or "Edit:Stroke" Photoshop function. You can assign "New Window" function to another F key or other functions to the F10 key. Be cautioned that if you assign a function key to the New Window command, do not hold down that function key but rather quickly press and release. If you hold down the key and allow autorepeat action to occur on the key, hundreds of new windows will be created and it will be a while before Photoshop is usable again. It is also possible that the window manager or X-server may crash or hang because it cannot handle so many open windows. KEYBOARD MAPPING ISSUES ------------------------ In order to the change keyboard preferences in previous releases of Photoshop, you were required to copy a file named "photoshop.mackeys" from the app-defaults subdirectory within the Photoshop install directory into your home directory. This is no longer required because the keyboard can now be changed in the preferences menu. If you have a file named Photoshop in your home directory from a previous version of Photoshop, remove the lines referring to shiftPrefix, shiftKey, controlPrefix, controlKey, commandPrefix, commandKey, optionPrefix, optionKey, lockPrefix and lockKey. This will eliminate confusion with the new keyboard mapping configuration. Photoshop and Open Windows keyboard commands are in conflict when the "Macintosh Keyboard" file is selected in Keyboard Preferences. For example, the Photoshop keyboard command to close a document (Meta W) will minimize the document instead of closing it. You can resolve this key command conflict by setting the Open Windows keyboard properties to "application only". Choose Application Only from the WorkSpace > Properties > Category > Keyboard > Keyboard Menu Equivalents menu. NOTE: this will also disable ALL Open Windows keyboard commands. Any Photoshop keyboard commands that conflict with Window Manager commands will require the Shift key to be used in addition to the standard modifier for execution. Please see the "Adobe Photoshop 2.5.2 Getting Started Guide" for further details on this issue. ISSUES FOR 8-BIT MACHINES -------------------------- Photoshop can display colors incorrectly on 8-bit machines when user is running other applications that have affected the system color map. Restart the window manager and do not run these other applications at the same time as Photoshop. ACQUIRING GREYSCALE IMAGES WITH THE ACQUIRE EPS PLUG-IN ------------------------------------------------------- If the Grayscale preference has been set in the Acquire EPS Plug-in dialog a color file will be displayed in Greyscale but it will be in RGB mode. ZOOM DIALOG BOX ---------------- If you delete all values in the Zoom dialog box and enter OK, Photoshop may crash. Avoid deleting all values. WINDOW MODE ICONS MAY DISAPPEAR ------------------------------- If you change Photoshop preferences (except for general preferences) and quit out of Photoshop, three windowing mode icons on the tool palette may disappear on the next launch. If you remove the Photoshop preferences file and restart Photoshop, the icons will reappear. SAVING AMIGA HAM WITHOUT INTERLACE CORRUPTS FILE -------------------------------------------------- Users are recommended to use Save As Amiga HAM only with the interlace button turned on, since without this feature the file saved will open as completely black. TEMP FILES MAY REMAIN AFTER CRASH OR KILL OF PHOTOSHOP ------------------------------------------------------ If Photoshop crashes or is killed for any reason, it will not remove temp files created in your user directory, which it will do during the normal quit process. If you have killed the Photoshop process or have experienced a crash, you will need to delete the temp file from your /Photoshop.MacFiles/System/Temporary Items directory. SCRATCH DISK SPACE NOT RELEASED UNTIL QUIT -------------------------------------------- As Photoshop is used, scratch disk space used and held by Photoshop files will keep accumulating, even if these files are closed. Photoshop will not free up scratch disk space again until the program has quit. CERTAIN KEYS MAY REPEAT ----------------------- There are instances where the return or enter key when used will repeat its operation again even though the user has only pressed the key once. This may also happen with function keys, tab key, Mkey1 and Mkey2. If this happens the user should press any key on the keyboard which will cancel this behavior. DUOTONE & PANTONE COLOR NAMES INACCURATE WHEN LOADED ---------------------------------------------------- When working with Duotone files, when PMS_duotone, PMS_tritone, or PMS_quadtone colors (included with Photoshop) are loaded into a file, the letter "C" is tagged onto the end of the color names. This extra letter needs to be deleted if the file is going to be printed from another application, or else the wrong color may be printed. It is recommended that the user either delete this extra letter manually in the text box or to click on the color swatch and then click ok when the color picker dialog comes up, which will automatically drop the extra letter. LASSO TOOL WITH MKEY2 MAY HANG PHOTOSHOP ---------------------------------------- If the lasso tool is used with the Mkey2 modifier the user may experience a hang, especially if the user clicks outside of the image area while using this feature. It is sometimes possible to press the escape key to return to normal functioning, but if this doesn't work the Photoshop process will have to be killed and Photoshop will need to be re-launched. ADD NOISE FILTER MAY CRASH ON SX MACHINES ----------------------------------------- In some circumstances, the Add Noise filter can cause Photoshop to crash on SX machines when using the SXCharged plug-in. If you need to use the Add Noise filter, run Photoshop with environment variable PHOTOSHOP_SXCHARGED set to false. Refer to the Getting Started Guide for how to set this environment variable. ================ PRODUCT LIMITATIONS ===================== THE CD-ROM MAY NOT BE ACCESSIBLE OUTSIDE OF PHOTOSHOP ----------------------------------------------------- If you add a CD-ROM to your Go To... Directory list (see Using the Open File Dialog Box in the Getting Started guide), the CD-ROM contents may not be accessible from other applications while Photoshop is running. Quitting Photoshop will make them available. NO INTER-APPLICATION COMMUNICATION WITH THE EXPORT CLIPBOARD ------------------------------------------------------------ Photoshop is able to share clipboard contents to some extent with other applications as long as Photoshop is still active. While it is running, Photoshop uses the standard X/Motif clipboard to share data with other applications. By contrast, the Export Clipboard feature tells Photoshop to also save its clipboard to a file. Because no applications to date other than Photoshop itself can locate and recognize this saved clipboard file, the Export Clipboard option in the Photoshop General Preferences has been disabled for Sun. Toggling the button will have no effect on the product. INCOMPATIBILITY WITH XCLIPBOARD PROGRAM ---------------------------------------- Because Photoshop writes to the clipboard in a format which the xclipboard program does not recognize, using both products simultaneously may cause errors; it is recommended that use of the xclipboard be confined to operations outside of Photoshop. CREATE PUBLISHER AND PUBLISHER OPTIONS MENU ITEMS NOT AVAILABLE --------------------------------------------------------------- The Create Publisher and Publisher Options menu items under the Photoshop Edit menu are greyed out and not available for use in this version. PICT FILE FORMAT RESTRICTIONS ----------------------------- Photoshop has some trouble acquiring or opening object based PICT files. In extreme cases a program crash or data corruption may result. It is therefore recommended that the PICT file format be used judiciously and with extreme caution. Clicking on the Preview button in the Acquire PICT Resource dialog may crash Photoshop. NO BINARY PRINTING ------------------ Adobe Photoshop will only print with ASCII encoding even if you select the binary option from the Print dialog box. MAC FLOPPY USAGE ----------------- You will need to turn off the volume daemon (vold) if you want to read and write Macintosh formatted floppy disks. To turn off the volume daemon, issue the following command from a UNIX shell window (you must be root to do this): /etc/init.d/volmgt stop To turn it back on: /etc/init.d/volmgt start Additionally, the eject button will not be accessible unless you are accessing a mac floppy disk (and the volume daemon is off). SUNRASTER PLUG-IN LIMITATIONS ------------------------------ The SunRaster plug-in assumes that 24bit images are in RGB format. If they are in BGR format, load the image in Photoshop and flip the channels to the appropriate order. ============== CONFIGURATION AND PERFORMANCE ISSUES ================== PHOTOSHOP_MEMORY SETTING FOR MULTI-USER AND MULTI-PROCESSOR MACHINES -------------------------------------------------------------------- If more than one user will be running Photoshop at any given time, you will need to lower PHOTOSHOP_MEMORY from its default value if you want all users to achieve optimum performance. Additionally, if you have insufficient swap space, additional users may not be able to run at all or may experience sporadic product failure if PHOTOSHOP_MEMORY is not adjusted lower from its default value. Additional adjustments may be necessary on MP machines even if only one user at a time will be running Photoshop on the machine. MP machines require more resources dedicated to UNIX and fewer to Photoshop than single processor machines to achieve optimal Photoshop performance. Here are some recommendations for PHOTOSHOP_MEMORY settings when you have multiple users and/or multiple processors: One user, one processor: use default value for PHOTOSHOP_MEMORY One user, multiple processors: set PHOTOSHOP_MEMORY to larger of 6 or (RAM - 200MB) Multiple users, one processor (Sparc 10SX or 20): set PHOTOSHOP_MEMORY to larger of 6 or (SXmemory / #nusers), where SXmemory is the amount of reserved memory using sxconfig command. Multiple users, one processor (machines without SX accelerator): set PHOTOSHOP_MEMORY to larger of 6 or ((RAM-100MB) / #nusers) Multiple users, multiple processors (Sparc 10SX or 20): Photoshop defaults to using SXCharged plug-in, not MPCharged. If using SXCharged, set PHOTOSHOP_MEMORY to larger of 6 or (SXmemory / #nusers), where SXmemory is the amount of reserved memory using sxconfig command. If using MPCharged instead, set PHOTOSHOP_MEMORY to the larger of 6 or ((RAM - 200) / #users). Multiple users, multiple processors (machines without SX accelerator): Set PHOTOSHOP_MEMORY to the larger of 6 or ((RAM - 200) / #users). Refer to the Getting Started Guide for more instructions on environment variable PHOTOSHOP_MEMORY and the sxconfig command. PRINT SPOOL ISSUES ------------------ When the print command is issued from Photoshop, it writes out the print file into the ~/AdobePhotoshop/Photoshop.MacFiles/System/Temporary Items directory. It then issues an lpr or lp command, which will copy the file to the printer spooling directories (usually in the /var/spool/lp area) and the file will print from there. It is important that you have sufficient disk space for all these copies when printing large files. If Photoshop is aborted from a UNIX shell window (e.g., Ctl-C) while it is in the process of printing, a temporary PostScript file may be left behind in the Temporary Items directory and will need to be manually deleted to free up disk space. OPEN LOOK CONFIGURATION ----------------------- Users of Open Look may encounter cascading or marching windows if the .Xdefaults setting *borderWidth: 1 is set. Remove this line or change the value to alleviate this behavior. INSTALLING NET ACCOUNT AS ROOT OVER NFS --------------------------------------- If you install Photoshop on a network directory as root, NFS gives login "root" LESS permission over an NFS mount than it gives to normal users. One of the consequences of this is that it cannot preserve root-ownership of files created by root onto the network volume. Instead, it sets the ownership to "nobody" (which corresponds to the user-id of a negative value). RUN ON SOLARIS 2.3 BUT DISPLAY ON SUNOS --------------------------------------- Except for a few selected features (e.g., Acquire EPS plug-in, gaining access to fonts), Adobe Photoshop can run on a Solaris 2.3 machine and remotely display on computers running SunOS 4.1.x or generic X terminals, although performance may prove unacceptable. DISK STRIPING TO IMPROVE PERFORMANCE ------------------------------------ Disk striping is the technique of interleaving files across multiple disk drives to allow concurrent access and increased throughput. When the file data is striped across disks, improved performance is possible for large files. For drives of equal speed, it is better to have two small striped drives than one large non-striped drive. Consult the Sun documentation Online Disk Suite 2.0 for more information. USING A DEDICATED SWAP DISK TO IMPROVE PERFORMANCE -------------------------------------------------- Setting up your environment so that the UNIX swap area and Photoshop scratch disk are on separate drives may improve performance. See the Getting Started guide for information on Photoshop and Memory Use. IMPROVING DISPLAY SPEED ON SPARCSTATION 10SX AND 20 MODELS ---------------------------------------------------------- The SXCharged plug-in looks at an environment variable (PHOTOSHOP_USE_DGA) to decide whether to use Direct Graphics Acceleration (DGA). (DGA is one way on Sun platforms to achieve accelerated screen drawing.) Because of intermittent redisplay problems when using DGA with the SXCharged plug-in on SPARCstation 10SX and 20 models, by default Photoshop's launch script sets PHOTOSHOP_USE_DGA to false. You can turn DGA on for SXCharged and thereby increase display speed by setting environment variable PHOTOSHOP_USE_DGA to true before launching Photoshop. ==================== DOCUMENTATION ERRORS ============================ TUTORIAL AND BEYOND THE BASICS MKEY'S NOT CORRECTLY INDICATED ------------------------------------------------------------- The following MKEY references in the Tutorial and Beyond the Basics manuals should read as follows: Tutorial p.20 "You can access the eyedropper tool at any time by holding down MKEY2" p.84 "...choose Undo from the Edit menu (MKEY1-Z) to display..."
